Refurbishment Of The Quantum Electronics Laboratory (LEC)
The Quantum Electronics Laboratory (Laboratorio de Electrónica Cuántica, LEC) of the Physics Department of the School of Exact and Natural Sciences UBA is an interdisciplinary research laboratory focused in the study and application of optics for the monitoring and manipulation of physical and biological processes. With a history of 20 years of various accomplishments, LEC is today an internationally recognized research laboratory counting with state-of-the-art equipment and instrumentation. Nevertheless, the building space of the lab itself needs urgent refurbishment in order to achieve its full potential.
Led by is co-Director, Prof. Hernán Grecco, LEC has launched a donation campaign with the aim of collecting funds for the lab refurbishment and renovation. The planned works are organized around these objectives:
- Unification of the current two labs spaces, and then compartmentalization in smaller units. This will optimize the access to the lab and use of space, maximizing the number of people and experiments that can simultaneously operate in the lab.
- Suppression of dust generation (from wall cracks, broken tiles, etc.), which is very damaging to optical experiments.
- Refurbishment of the heating/AC system (lowering the ceiling and installing new piping) to ensure stable and appropriate temperatures for the correct functioning of lasers sources and other equipment.
- Renovation and optimization of the electrical system.
- Acquisition of new furniture as required, optimization of the internal data and phone network.
LEC already counts with very valuable equipment (microscopes, spectrometers, lasers, cameras, etc. and it is currently led by young researchers already recognized in their fields and driven to accomplish new things.
This lab refurbishment is key for LEC to achieve its full potential, and since there is a lack of institutional funds for infrastructure maintenance and improvement, we reach out to private sources to accomplish this project – a necessary condition to continue doing state-of-the-art research and development in optics and optical technologies.
