Grupo de Investigación y Educación en Temas Ambientales (Grieta)
GrIETA activities include field, laboratory, and conceptual research; design and execution of opinion surveys; writing and publication of research articles in books and scientific journals as well as its presentation in meetings and conferences; organization of meetings and conferences; promotion of knowledge through the popular media; and the organization of talks, workshops and courses at no cost to the public.
GOALS
To promote a more equitable and sustainable use of natural resources by means of research, education and outreach activities oriented to increase knowledge and public appreciation of nature and its relationships to humans.
OBJECTIVES
- Testing and advancing current ecological knowledge, primarily from the analysis of understudied regional systems.
- Generating knowledge necessary for a more sustainable use of natural resources and a better understanding and mitigation of environmental problems.
- Developing an understanding of what people knows and how people can better learn about ecological concepts and environmental issues.
- Increasing public awareness about the occurrence and extent of pressing environmental problems and the ways to mitigate them.
PROGRAMS
Environmental Education
This program seeks to increase public awareness about different environmental problems and the ways to mitigate them. Activities such as public talks, courses, workshops, production and publication of educational materials, cooperation with other organizations (both public and private ones), and diffusion in the media are carried out within the scope of this program. The summer educational campaigns on waste management (in execution since 2009) and the campaign for reduction of waste production in schools (in execution since 2010) are part of this program.
Biodiversity, Ecosystems & Society
The goal of this program is to generate knowledge, both for the conservation, management and restoration of the biodiversity and ecosystems of the region and the World; as well as to overcome errors and limitations in the social perception of environmental problems. Activities within this program include scientific research in the field and laboratory; conceptual review, development and synthesis; design and development of opinion surveys; data analysis; writing and publication of research articles in books and scientific journals; organization of meetings and conferences; presentation of research results in meetings and conferences; and the dissemination of research results in the popular media.
