In my weeks working at the Arts organization, I became involved in all of their current projects. Their mission, to imitate the renaissance style form of arts education, using a master-apprentice relationship, offers scholarships to promising young artists.
Students meet thrice-weekly with visiting artists. The most successful students blossom into professional artists. The organization has recently inaugurated "Galeria Prima", an open gallery in which to display the work of its students, and to feature other artists as well. The opening of the gallery and the event surrounding its inauguration constituted my primary commitment there. Some of examples of my daily duties include: contacting donors, establishing a fundraising network, interviewing artists and producing biographies, painting a room, compiling a database, and other various tasks.
I immensely enjoyed working with that organization. The staff and other volunteers worked effectively as a team, and the environment was relaxed and playful. About half of the people I worked with were volunteers like me. This split between full-time employees and volunteers enabled a balanced environment, without the hierarchical limitations of an office. I come away from that organization with a much deeper understanding of how non-for-profit organizations function, and an appreciative acknowledgement of all the miniscule tasks involved in such work.
