In Argentina, there are 2.2 million people with disabilities. This means that, in one of every five households, there is a person with a disability.
Due to the barriers that people with disabilities encounter on a daily basis, many live like prisoners in their own houses. In this situation, without the opportunity to leave the house, to communicate or to have access to education or community life, people with disabilities are becoming more and more "invisible" to the rest of society. La Usina seeks to make visible these 2.2 million invisible citizens.
Some of the successes of the initial five years of the organization include:
- More than 20,000 flyers handed out to citizens with information related to our various projects
- One Annual National Campaign to Raise Consciousness about Disabilities, product of a collaboration of university students
- More than 30 disability organizations throughout the country have received institutional advice to fortalize themselves and better their services to people with disabilities
- Bringing 2110 organizations to the national level to construct a national database
Citizenship Campaign "Qué se cumplan! Vos podés construir el cambio!"
In July of 2007, La Usina launched the campaign "Qué se cumplan! Vos podés construir el cambio!" (May they realize their potential! You can build the change!), with the objective of ensuring the enforcement of existing disability laws. By collecting 500,000 signatures to present to the government, the organization has tried to get the topic of disability in the public discourse and stimulate the participation of all with regards to this topic, people with and without disabilities. It is a topic that is relevant to everyone!
La Usina seeks that everyone helps to remove the barriers that people with disabilities face every day, and that they come together to create a sustainable, democratic society for all and by all.
La Usina needs your contribution for the Campaign
The Citizenship Campaign "Que se cumplan! Vos podés construir el cambio" is a campaign on the national level with a budget of $56,965.
The campaign is currently with the international support of the Abilis Foundation for an amount equivalent to $33,000. $23,965 is left to collect on the local level.
With your support La Usina can continue working so that people with disabilities can exercise their right to liberty, health, education, and work, and that they have the possibility to decide in what way they may develop their abilities within their communities.
