Why pay to volunteer?

Prospective volunteers are sometimes surprised to learn that there is often a financial cost involved in international volunteer work. At first this may seem unfair - why would I pay to volunteer my time? The answer is in the main goal of the InsightArgentina program: to facilitate a mutually beneficial experience, both for the host NGO, and for the volunteer.

A girl from an organization in SaltaThe benefit of international volunteerism is that the NGO is benefiting from the efforts of the volunteer, and at the same time the volunteer has the opportunity to do important, interesting work, and comes away with a unique insight into the host country, the host NGO, and the social sector.

However, the establishment of this relationship does require considerable time and effort, and HelpArgentina works hard to analyze the needs of the NGOs they work with, as well as the profiles of prospective volunteers, to create the right match.

Part of the volunteer contribution, USD 100, goes to the organization itself and to the projects volunteers will be assisting with there. The remainder of the contribution goes to fund administrative costs, volunteer recruitment, pre-, post-, and in-country support, building and maintaining partnerships with our member NGOs, following and assisting in the development and execution of volunteer projects, training and orientation, and the personal insurance.

This is a flat program contribution, regardless of the length of the program.

InsightArgentina Scholarships

InsightArgentina offers merit-based scholarships, which consist of a full or partial program fee waiver. These scholarships are for people who want to commit for four to six months with the host organization, volunteering at least 20 hours per week and are offered to qualified individuals whose skills and language level match the needs of the host organization. Applicants must have an advanced Spanish level and at least 3 years of professional experience in the area whose skills match a punctual need within one of our member NGOs. Please email insightargentina@helpargentina.org for more information.

Program Policies

In addition to these program requirements, we encourage Responsible Volunteering. If you want to learn more about the volunteer commitment follow this link.

Age requirement

Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of their trip.

Spanish level

Volunteers must have a basic level of Spanish (at least three semesters of studying).

International insurance

Volunteers must have an international medical insurance that covers them in case of accidents and illness, during their time abroad only. Many insurance plans already include this; program participants should check with their providers before purchasing a new plan. InsightArgentina can provide suggestions for International Emergency Insurance providers if needed.

Program start dates

Learning program for adult Mapuches Programs can start any month of the year. There are no specific months for applying to the programs. We receive applications during the whole year.

We consider applicants on a rolling basis. You should submit an application form and a resume at least two weeks prior to their preferred starting date. Applications submitted less than two weeks before starting date will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

We recommend volunteers to start their programs on Monday or Tuesday.

Program length

There is a 4-week minimum volunteer commitment, except for short-term programs which will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Payment, refunds and cancellations

There is a program fee of USD 450 to be paid once the acceptance e-mail has been sent. The applicant can also make two payments of USD 225 before arrival.

If a program is cancelled by a participant more than 3 weeks prior to the start date, a refund will be issued for the program contribution paid, minus the USD 200. If the program is cancelled less than 3 weeks prior to the start date or during the program, a refund will not be issued.

If, for unforeseen reasons, InsightArgentina considers it to be in the best interest of the applicant's safety and quality of programming, the program might be cancelled. Upon this unlikely event, we will offer applicants the choice of re-scheduling the program or receiving a full refund on all contributions made. We are not able, however, to take responsibility for other costs applicants may have incurred while preparing for the trip.
