"He started by wanting to buy a cow for a rural school and... you know how these things go... they are building the third school by now", told us Hernán's mom.
Hernán Silva is an Argentine but he has lived in Chicago for the last six years. With other Argentines, he founded an organization, Argentina Chicago, which unites Argentine professionals in Chicago. Together, they contribute time and resources for the raising of funds for the construction and maintenance of rural schools throughout the country. Having studied in public schools his whole life, for Hernán education has always been and will always be an important cause. It is where he sees all the possibilities for a fairer and more just Argentina.
This is why in the last four years, the group has identified projects desired by schools in remote areas of Argentina and has raised funds to help realize these projects. The first project the group supported was the creation of a kitchen as an annex onto a school in Pasaje las Bravas, Chaco. The following year, and with growing enthusiasm, the group led the construction of a completely new school in the same community. In 2006, Argentina Chicago supported the construction of another new school in Pampa del Indio, Chaco. The Toba community of this area is one of the poorest in the whole province, and the school gives hope to the whole community. For the first time, indigenous children can have a bilingual education, learning to understand Spanish perfectly while also communicating in their mother language.
