We at TangoVia Buenos Aires believe that memory is the cornerstone upon which identity is constructed. The compilation and careful preservation of cultural patrimony guarantee memory and strengthen identity. The Tango Digital Archive鈥檚 primary objective is to preserve the cultural patrimony of tango before it is lost forever. The collections of records, photographs, sheet music and movies that we recover are unique and invaluable. The advanced age of many collectors, the estimated value of this material on the international black market, and the precarious conditions in which many materials are stored make this project urgent. We know of thousands of recordings that no longer exist in any format; they are lost forever. Today we have the opportunity to save a fundamental part of our cultural memory, but we need help. This archive will offer a comprehensive perspective of tango, previously reserved for a few specialists, to schools, conservatories, and universities, historians, journalists, researchers and anyone curious, both today and in the future. UNESCO recently declared tango an 鈥渋ntangible cultural heritage of humanity.鈥漈he creation of this digital archive to safeguard and share the tango is not a luxury; it is a necessity
Main Objetive: The Tango Digital Archive鈥檚 goal is to digitize the cultural patrimony of聽 tango in its entirety, integrating unique and rare collections, and guaranteeing the preservation of extraordinary resources, including audio, graphic and audiovisual materials before they are lost forever.
We urgently need to expand the number of units for digitizing audio materials
We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, education, study and diffusion of all aspects of tango culture from its origins to the present day: music, poetry, and dance
In order to achieve the mission of the organization, TangoVia Buenos Aires conducts a variety of activities that fall within four large categories:
鈥 the training of musicians and the general public in the language of tango,
鈥 the preservation of our musical heritage,
鈥 the production of tango events,
鈥 and the diffusion and study of the culture and history of tango.
The Emilio Balcarce Tango Orchestra School
The Emilio Balcarce Tango Orchestra School is a pedagogical initiative created in 2000 by Ignacio Varchausky, supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires. This project brings together different generations of musicians, making possible the direct transmission of the cultural legacy of the great tango masters.
During a two year program of study, the students have the opportunity to play the original arrangements of the 1940s and 鈥50s orchestras, always learning directly from musicians who played in that era and are still active today, and also guided by the experience of important professionals of the younger generation.

2002
On Saturday, September 11th, 2010, the Artistic Director of TangoVia Buenos Aires Ignacio Varchausky presented the Tango Digital Archive at the Buenos Aires Tango Festival in Rome. The presentation was held in the Spazio Ascolto theater of the Auditorium Parco della Musica and was very well-received by the public and the Italian press. That same day, the French newspaper Le Monde published a two-page article about the TDA in their weekly magazine. Spreading the word about the archive will help us raise the funds necessary to continue and complete this transcendental effort to recover and preserve this patrimony.
